Concert Introduction

As the grand finale of the New Element Music 2025 Spring Season, the Closing Gala – EAST meets WEST promises an evening of musical brilliance, cultural dialogue, and artistic fusion. Over the course of March, the Spring Season featured 12 lunchtime concerts across historic churches in London, Oxford, and Birmingham, showcasing extraordinary chamber music performances by ten international ensembles.

The Closing Gala will revisit the most celebrated and audience-acclaimed pieces from the season, bringing them to life once again. In addition, the program will introduce newly commissioned works that fuse Eastern and Western musical traditions, featuring Chinese and Western instruments in innovative arrangements. This is a unique opportunity to experience the harmonious blending of different musical heritages, bridging centuries and continents through sound.

Sky

I miss you 这四月的天空

I miss you 这四月的天空

I miss you 这四月的天空

How about we just take a walk together,

Last night, the stars, last night, the breeze,

It was an endless romance of a warm spring.

Under the flowering trees, the rain drizzles down, pitter-patter.

Morning dew kisses the mountain peach blossoms,

In the courtyard, steam rises from fresh-brewed tea.

The wind chime sways beneath the eaves, tick-tock, tick-tock.

The tram hasn’t arrived yet, hasn’t arrived yet,

Should we open an umbrella?

How about we just take a walk together,

I miss you under this April sky,

By the riverbank beneath the bridge,

The wind brushes through the willow leaves.

How about we just take a walk together,

Morning dew kisses the mountain peach blossoms,

In the courtyard, steam rises from fresh-brewed tea.

The wind chime sways beneath the eaves, tick-tock, tick-tock.

The tram hasn’t arrived yet,

Should we open an umbrella?

How about we just take a walk together,

I miss you under this April sky,

By the riverbank beneath the bridge,

The wind brushes through the willow leaves.

How about we just take a walk together,

I miss you under this April sky,

By the riverbank beneath the bridge,

The wind brushes through the willow leaves.

How about we just take a walk together,

How about we just take a walk together?

A Ballade

Music and Lyrics by: Jolin Jiang

Translated (English) by: Toni Berg

。。 In the south yard beneath the Lan Mountain,

lay a tree’s seed.

Plucked by a boy whilst on a toy horse,

he rode to a girl’s home.

She crept outside, silently,

while his hand covered his mouth.

Just there in serenity,

they planted the seed.

A sliver of spring fluttered in,

he clasped her hand:

“When we grow old,

we’ll have a home beside this tree.”

He whispered sweet nothings,

she blushed like a shy flower.

Just there in serenity,

the tree sprouted softly.

An ethereal voice drifted from the radio, praising a distant world.

She longed to see what lay beyond,

glimpse this mystical place

He ascended the mountain’s peak,

waving as she left his sight.

Just there in serenity,

he watched over the tree as it grew alone.

No matter when she thinks of that time,

it will always be there

No matter when he gazes at the distant land,

it will never respond

No matter how the morning light shines,

the snow or frost falls

the tree will only gently rustle

It has already sprouted but will it bloom?

Autumn pressed on the Lan Mountain,

as she finally returned.

south yard’s tree waited stoically,

a finished house beside

Listening to her tales from the distant world,

he was wordless, unable to respond

just there in serenity,

the tree’s branches swayed softly.

She suddenly turned to him,

clasping his hand:

“Come with me,

let me take you to the distant world!”

Pulling back his hand in shock,

he recoiled and shook his head

“The tree will bloom so soon,

how could you bear to part with it?”

Squeezing his hands, she cried,

“the sights of that world are like nothing you’ve seen!

vast, limitless earth and sky,

what is this sapling compared to that!

What of our dreams?

What of more wishes?

This south yard beneath the Lan Mountain,

how could it hold them?

No matter when she thinks of that time,

it will always be there

No matter when he gazes at the distant land,

it will never respond

No matter how the morning light shines,

the snow or frost falls

the tree will only gently rustle

It has already sprouted but will it bloom?

Ah!

The tree has already sprouted.

But how would it bloom again?

At last she carried her belongings,

leaving for the distant world in solitude,

Visiting the southern yard for the final time,

she spoke through tearful eyes:

“Thank you for your home,

but I will leave the moment I turn around.

If the tree cannot wait so long, let it wither.”

He was speechless,

he gave no answer,

walking into the tree’s heart,

he became one with the tree.

Standing in serenity,

the tree guarded her as she left.

What the World Gave Me

Some set off fireworks,

some chase the evening breeze,

Borrow a moment of time,

cradle a sky full of stars.

Pause a little, wait a while, don’t rush,

Dream-makers craft good dreams,

worthy of my praise.

The world gifts me the chirping of insects,

and also the roar of thunder,

Gifts me a crescent moon,

and also the evening stars.

Gifts me an illness,

then slowly heals it with wind chimes,

Gifts me emptiness,

then gradually fills it with true emotions.

Some sing love songs,

some listen to the evening bells,

Borrow a trace of innocence,

marvel at the surging waves.

Chase a little, catch up fast,

love runs deep,

Good stories favor good people,

a blessing from the heavens.

The world gifts me possessions,

and also the grace to give back,

Gifts me a small window,

and also a rooftop.

Gifts me a name,

then a gradually growing age,

Gifts me a poem,

then lets me read it in quiet solitude.

Some look back,

some look forward,

Borrow a drifting white cloud,

take a picture together.

Think a little, ask yourself,

don’t inquire too much,

Those who have gone have ventured far—may they find peace.
